Do you ever wonder how much the extras on the Yellowstone TV series get paid? Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be on the set of a TV show? Well, we did too. So we decided to investigate and find out what it’s really like when you’re Yellowstone extras, which is on the Paramount network.
For those who don’t know, “Yellowstone” is a historical drama that takes place in Montana during the early 20th century. The show centers around the fictional Dutton family and their ranching empire. It features actors Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Luke Grimes, Josh Lucas, and Ted Danson.
But back to the point: The Cat’s Claw Queen, Toby-Jeanne, and I (the Head Cat Collector) decided to share the answer to the big question that everyone has been asking!
I’m sure you’re scratching your head and wondering “what these two cats were up to and how did they get on set?” Let’s just say that money wasn’t a factor in our decision to go. Rather, we went because we were interested in learning more about the opportunity. And as for how we were able to get on set, well, Toby-Jeanne had heard about the opportunity first, and she worked her magic in order to get us both on as extras for the same scene, which is fantastic in my opinion!
Now, on to the information you are here for: how much money you can make working as an extra on the set of the Yellowstone TV series?
According to our sources (aka The Cat’s Claw Queen and myself), Yellowstone extras get paid anywhere from $130 to $150 per day plus $40 for gas — which is not at all a bad thing, but there is a possibility that you will be on set for over twelve hours. Now, the hours may seem long, but that’s what you get when you’re an extra and don’t have lines to memorize.
Benefits of Being an Extra on a TV Show
It may seem discouraging to wait in line so long, but it’s not about the money. It’s about the experience, exposure, fun times, and great networking opportunities. As we’ve learned from our own experiences as extras on set, being an extra is just as much about what happens away from your camera time as it is about what happens in front of it. When you’re chatting it up with all of the wonderful extras on set, you have the opportunity to meet new people who may share similar interests or hobbies as yourself. And in our particular scenario, you and your incredible new friends might make the decision to go out to dinner so that the party doesn’t have to end when you leave the set for the day.
Now, this is by no means an incredibly glamorous job; in fact, it can be quite difficult at times. But there is potential for advancement here. Even if all you do is watch from afar and act like you’re having a serious conversation over dinner (have you ever pretended to eat a salad? (The Cat’s Claw Queen has!), you’ll still have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of things that most people will never have the chance to see or experience. The best part about being a background actor is that you can be anyone you want to be. If your character name is John Smith and you’re looking for a job as a waiter but have no real experience in the field, don’t worry! All of those times that you’ve repeatedly watched your favorite movies and TV shows will come in handy here. Just think about how many times your favorite actors and actresses have had to play someone who works at a restaurant (or even just visited one).
Other Things to Consider When Being an Extra
You’ve probably seen it a million times, so you can use that as your reference point. You could even take an acting class to learn how to develop characters and get more comfortable on camera. Though that is absolutely not a requirement to be an extra. In fact, many extras have no experience in acting at all. So if you’re just looking to get on set and figure it out as you go, that’s totally fine too! The most important thing is that you enjoy the process of making movies and television shows.
If you do, then this is the perfect opportunity to get started. So don’t be discouraged if you feel like being an extra isn’t a real acting job. It definitely is! And it can be a lot of fun, too. Extra casting is a great way to get started in the world of acting. It’s a good way to learn about what it takes to make a movie or TV show and what goes on behind the scenes. And if you enjoy being an extra, then there are even more opportunities for you once you’ve gained some experience.
