When you are building anything, you must use the correct materials that correlate with the structure you are building to ensure everything functions as intended. The same is true when building a fence. For instance, you wouldn’t mix wood with wire or paneling with electric fencing.
When you know the specifics of what you need and how you will construct the fence, you can move forward with the project without any issues. Another matter of importance you must finalize before beginning construction is learning how to know when you have enough fasteners for your fence.
Types of Fasteners
The first question that comes to mind is whether to use a screw or a nail when constructing a fence. The reality is there are all kinds of ways to fasten things down.
For wire fencing, you can use wire hanger clips that wrap themselves around the t-posts and twist in place around the ends of the wire to keep them from going anywhere. The type of fence you have will also determine what kind of fastener will be most beneficial. The type of fastener you choose for your material will greatly determine how well your fence will be fastened.
Material Does Matter
Not all fences are exactly the same. You might have two wooden fences with completely different structural integrities. One may use oak lumber with three-inch zinc-coated steel screws, another may have four-inch steel nails in treated pine, and a third may have lag bolts with washers and nuts in Cedarwood. Even if each type of wood is two inches thick, they will all require different fastening methods in order for the fence to remain structurally sound for a long period.
Wood or Wire
This might be the most obvious observation of all—you shouldn’t use nails or screws to fasten a wire fence, just as you wouldn’t use wire on a wooden fence. Both wire and wood have specialty fasteners that make them come together for the final product and are specific to the types of material you are using when constructing your fence.
With wood, your best bet is screws, as they will grip better and be less likely to slip and come out over time. Fasteners for a welded wire fence include special wire clips that help hold the wire fence in place. How well you space these clips and how tight you keep your panel while fastening will impact the integrity of the wire fence.
Knowing when you have enough fasteners for your fence will be determined by several factors. You will need to consider the types of material you are using for your fencing, the best fasteners for the job, and the size of your materials to ensure you can achieve the result you want.
